Eulogies as University of Ibadan honours late Agagu

The former Ondo governor was a lecturer at UI.

A host of politicians, academics, industrialists, royal fathers, and other individuals from other walks of life gathered at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, on Monday to honour Olusegun Agagu, former Governor of Ondo State, who died in Lagos early this month.

The event was organised by the Department of Geology in which Mr. Agagu was once a student and later a lecturer before he left to fulfill his political ambitions.

A former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who was represented by his wife, Bola, said he was hit hard by Mr. Agagu's death. Mr. Obasanjo described the late former governor as a detribalised Nigerian and a committed party man.

"We shall all miss Olusegun Agagu. The family will miss a very loving and responsible father; friends will miss a reliable friend, who is loyal, frank and unpretentious; Nigeria will miss another great son who is selfless and committed nation builder.

"Even when he was cheated, he resorted to legal means instead of being violent. Olusegun Agagu has left us to go to another side where he will be cheated no more. Sun un re o (rest in peace)," Mr. Obasanjo said.

In his tribute titled Not How Long, But How Well, former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, remarked that his counterpart had a soft spot for the poor and the interest of his people at heart until he passed on.

Mr. Daniel, who said he was speaking on behalf of former Governors Rashidi Ladoja (Oyo), Adebayo Alao-Akala (Oyo), Segun Oni (Ekiti), and Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), praised Mr. Agagu's effort in discovering crude oil in Ondo State.

"Dr. Agagu's name will ever linger in our hearts for his diligence, humility, loyalty, patriotism and quiet philanthropy," Mr. Daniel said.

The incumbent Governors of Oyo, Osun and Ekiti states, Abiola Ajimobi, Rauf Aregbesola and Kayode Fayemi respectively, were not left out in the flurry of eulogy that poured on the deceased governor who was also a cabinet Minister under former President Obasanjo.

Mr. Ajimobi said Ondo State and the entire Yoruba land should be proud of Mr. Agagu's good legacy.

"We saw in him a responsible intellectual who always enjoyed adding value to peoples' lives until he breathed his last", Mr. Aregbesola said.

Mr. Fayemi said, "Dr. Agagu lived above political pettiness, rancour and acrimony. Uncle Segun was a quintessential gentleman, who always made himself available for the progress and development of his people".

The spokesperson for the business community, Tonye Cole, also eulogised Mr. Agagu for supporting business entrepreneur, pointing out that "Dr. Agagu always gave us advice beneficial to our business concern."

Kola Ademiju, the Chief of Staff to the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, described the deceased as a worthy son of the state, adding that Mr. Agagu's lofty contribution to the state would never be forgotten.

One of Mr. Agagu's children, Feyi, thanked the gathering for honouring her late father.
